Seedtime and Harvest

After the Flood, Noah sacrificed to God. God responded. In part, God’s response was, ‘While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, winter and summer, and day and night shall not cease.’ (Gen 8:22)

Seed is first mentioned in Gen 1:11 where we read, ‘Then God said, “Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb that yields seed, and the tree that yields fruit, whose seed is in itself according to its kind.”’ The principle of seed in itself is carried over to human beings, particularly in relation to Abraham. Jesus is referred to as his seed (Gal 3:16). Abraham also had seed in terms of his natural offspring, in terms of national Israel (through Jacob and Isaac) and in terms of the Christian church (Gal 3:26-29, Rom 9:6-7).

Seedtime and harvest is also a more general principle. We reap what we sow. (Gal 6:7) Whatever we plant in our lives, we will eventually reap after the same kind as the ‘seed’ we sowed. (Gal 6:8, see also Prov 11:18b and Prov 22:8a) We need to guard carefully what we think, say and do because our thoughts, words and deeds are seeds that will surely bear fruit in our lives after a period of time. Negative thoughts, words and actions produce negative outcomes. Positive thoughts, words and actions produce positive outcomes.

If you’ve sown negative seed the only way to avoid a negative outcome is to pray that God will cause the harvest to fail! If you’ve sown positive seed, beware of Satan who prowls around seeking to devour you (1 Pet 5:8) and to rob, kill and destroy (John 10:10a). Protect your positive harvest by claiming the blood of Jesus. Remember: Jesus came that we might have life and life more abundantly. (John 10:10b)
